Inventions and Creations:

Richard was asked to partner with John Houston (deceased) to help develop John's Heavy Duty Bath Seat Lift. This project has been developed into an effective prototype featuring stainless steel design and powered by rechargeable batteries. Richard and John's wife, Beverly Houston, are looking for a marketing agent to help them to provide help and support to the thousands of individuals that would enjoy privacy while doing their bathroom activities and those other thousands of health care providers that strain their backs in lifting heavy patients from the bath seats.  US Patent No. 6,154,896

Richard's own creations include among many other projects, a fishing rod holder to safely and securely hold fishing rods in the ceiling of a pickup topper. This basic design for the rod holder is very effective in securely holding an unattended rod on a lake or river bank or wooden fishing dock. The design accomodates either a spinning or casting rod.  Can also be used for storage on a wall or ceiling.

Another invention is a 'barn-door' tracking device to rotate the camera at the speed of the earth's rotation in order to take pictures of stars and such with timed exposure.  The device is powered by a 1 revolution per minute 12VDC motor which can be powered by the cigarette lighter of an auto.  The tripod is made of ash wood and weighted with lead bags to provide a stable platform.  The axis of rotation is positioned to the North Pole with the aid of a one-power scope from an old Army rifle.  A visible feedback is provided allowing the operator to make adjustments to the speed to correct for any error in tracking the star or object.  The result is ability to make long time exposures as seen in attached Milky-Way image with a 20 minute exposure, looking due South from a location near Lake Afton in Sedgwick County, Kansas.  Click here for an image of the comet Hale-Bopp with a short 12 second exposure above the Saint Joseph Church in Western Sedgwick county.  A later image of the comet was taken on April 12, 1997 showing the comet breaking off two parts of it in a 5 minute exposure.  These images have not previously been recorded and were sent to NASA for the record.
